The Science Behind Why Cats Meow Is Oddly Touching (And Very Surprising)

Everyone knows that dogs bark and cats meow, but we really didn’t know why. That’s what inspired this group of scientists to dig around and figure out what causes the cat’s meow.

The answer that they found is pretty flattering, and so surprising. When you learn the truth, you’ll never look at your feline friends the same way again.

That certainly explains a lot. Here’s what veterinarian Dr. John Bradshaw of Bristol University had to say:

The meow starts off as a kitten vocalization. It’s something they use in order to call their mothers over…the mother is very attentive to those meows. And then as the kitten grows up, it gradually stops meowing, presumably because it just stops working. The mother wants to wean the kittens and stops responding. A pet cat is constantly meowing at its owner. It’s a way of getting the owner’s attention.

Pretty cute, am I right? They’re just trying to talk to us!

Finnish Photographer Shoots Foxes, And We Cant Finnish Looking At Them

Remember the Finnish photographer Ossi Saarinen, the guy who captures “angry birds” in real life? It turns out that he also has huge love with wild foxes, and his photos say it all.

Ossi has photographed wild foxes since last summer. In an early morning, when he was just wandering around countryside with his camera, Ossi luckily encountered baby foxes. The cubs noticed his presence, but without any fear, they curiously come close to check out this human with their eye wide opened. He quietly took photos of them, enjoyed watching them playing with each other, and felt the emergence of a special connection to this animal. Since that unforgettable moment, fox has become an endless inspiring topic for his photos.

Ossi’s pictures show foxes as mysterious and charming creatures. The photos make people feel like they are living in beautiful fairytales. While curious fox cubs melt our heart, sleeping foxes behind bushes give us a relaxing feeling, and lonely fox walking in the night makes us thrilled. In these photos, it seems like foxes have more personality than ever. Hopefully, you can enjoy his photos and fall in love more with this subtle but lovely animal.

A Hunter Shot This Mountain Lion But Freaked Out When He Got A Better Look At It

When a hunter was out on the trail in Idaho, he came across a mountain lion. Taking aim, he noticed something strange about the beast just before he decided to take the shot. After that, he followed state law and brought this animal to Idaho’s Fish and Game (IDFG) office to be checked out. IDFG officers are required to remove teeth from harvested mountain lions to gather data.

That’s when an officer on the scene noticed something that he knew the world would have trouble believing. But with photographic proof, it can’t be denied.

Though biologists and veterinarians never got a chance to examine the animal, it’s interesting to hear their thoughts. Was the animal originally a conjoined twin? Is that a tumor on its head? We may never know.

Thai Tiger Temple denies it abused, traded cats

Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand (CNN)The Buddhist temple accused of abusing dozens of tigers seized by wildlife authorities in Thailand has denied allegations that it mistreated or traded the animals on the black market.

In an exclusive interview with CNN, the temple’s abbot, Luang Ta Chan, said that he felt “sick” when the tigers were taken from the temple.
“I already have a heart problem and what they just did to me… was just like they gave me another heart attack.”
He twice declined to directly answer questions posed by CNN regarding the trafficking of tiger parts or live tiger smuggling from the temple.
When asked, he responded: “Let me tell you this, my feeling now it is just like I am destroyed, completely destroyed. (I have) nothing left, I am 65 years old already…The department of national parks just destroyed my soul. This is all I can say.”
He said that he did not address the public to explain the situation at the park while the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) raid was ongoing because there was “no point to explain.
“There is no point of doing that, it was all false news. I didn’t want to legitimize it.”

    Temple official: ‘Robbery’

At a press conference Thursday,a representative for the monks Siri Wangboonlert said,”this is a robbery. They have no right to confiscate the tigers.”
The Tiger Temple was a popular attraction with visitors who paid an entrance fee to pet and pose for photos with the 137 cats, but it had faced substantial criticism over its alleged practices.
Chan had been expected to speak at the press conference, but arrived on a gold cart and waved at reporters before leaving. Accused of fleeing the temple when the raid occurred, he told CNN that he was at my temple “all along. When the (the DNP) was here, they just could not find me.”
Temple officials said he had not been involved in the running of the sanctuary and could not speak as he had recently undergone a heart operation.
Around 20 police and military officers were also present.

    Fate of tigers

The 137 confiscated tigers have been moved to a new home at a government sanctuary in Ratchaburi Province, about 90 km (56 miles) away.
Mia Hunter, who said she volunteered with the temple for three years, insisted that while the sanctuary was “imperfect”, it is “better for the cats than where they have been taken to.”
Noochdumrong said that wasn’t true. “Our sanctuaries are in good condition and ready to care for any animals. We have our own veterinarians 24/7, and we have opened our places to allow media to see with their own eyes.”
There are only around 4,000 tigers left in the wild. After a century of declining numbers, the tiger population is finally on the rise.
April data from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) showed that the tiger population had increased for the first time from as few as 3,200 in 2010.
But the NGO warned that there was much work to be done for the species and they still face enormous pressures from poaching, retaliatory killings and habitat loss.

    Squirrel Winter Olympics

Every day these wild red squirrels are being challenged to find there food. For 5 years, I have placed props in scenes with food in my garden. Every day I wait for them to capture them for my camera. I started with this series with the first snow in October. Sometimes I never get the shot I am looking for. It is most of the time a challenge maybe that is why I still shoot squirrel photos. They never bore me, besides that, they have become my close little friends.

He Took His Cat To A Dog Show — And What Happened Is Obviously Adorable

How does your cat spend its afternoons? Probably with a good nap, playing with some toys, maybe even tormenting the mail carrier

But for Boomer the Bengal cat, he’d rather spend the day showing off his training. And what better place to do it…than at a dog show!

Boomer’s been taught by a professional trainer to walk around on a leash greeting other animals, but when he does it at a dog show, some might contend that he becomes the life of the party, not the pooches!

That little nose boop that he offers to every new pup is just too adorable!

More dogs and cats need to be BFF.

Most People Want Puppies, But This Family Shows Us Why Senior Dogs Are Even Better

When families finally make the decision to adopt a dog, there’s usually a certain kind that they already have in mind — and we’re not necessarily talking about breed or size. The fact of the matter is that people want puppies.

Unfortunately, this means that thousands of amazing elderly dogs are euthanized every year. These senior pups are usually just down on their luck, and all they want is to spend the latter halves of their lives in homes full of love and happiness. Sure, puppies are adorable, but who says grey noses can’t be just as cute? If you’re still not convinced, check this out!

Even if you can’t adopt one of these cute and cuddly dogs, you can help spread the word by sharing this video with your friends. Together, we can ensure that no more elderly dogs finish their lives in shelters.

Twitter can’t decide if it’s ‘Team Lion’ or ‘Team Buffalo’ in ‘Planet Earth’ battle

        Image: bbc / mashable composite

LONDON Sometimes in Planet Earth II’s more intense scenes of animal interaction you know exactly who to root for let’s be real, nobody was cheering for the snakes in that intense chase scene with the baby iguana during the “Islands” episode.

However, the show’s most profound moments often come when the audience can’t quite choose who they want to come out on top.

Sunday night’s episode provided one such nail-biting scenario when a hungry pride of lions attempted to tackle a large water buffalo.

This led to a gripping question being posed on Twitter: are you ‘Team Lion,’ or ‘Team Buffalo?’

‘Team Buffalo’ was impressed by the water buffalo’s display of undeniable badassery in the face of a freaking LION ATTACK.

Whereas ‘Team Lion’ was utterly smitten by the lion cubs, and who can blame them because can you say cuteness overload?

This little cat is ‘Team Lion’ by association, we assume.

And on ‘Team Undecided,’ people grappled with the harsh reality of nature.

In the end spoiler alert the water buffalo walks away wounded but alive, and the pride of lions (including the adorable cubs) must look elsewhere for their next meal.

Regardless of which side you take, at the end of the day we can agree that we’re all ‘Team Attenborough.’

Surf on, Jed. We’ll be on the beach.

These Cats Think That Their Human Is A Tree, And What They Do With Her Is So Funny

When an entire litter of kittens was reunited with the woman who saved them, they only wanted to do one thing — show her some love. But in their minds, there was only one way to do it.

Not waiting for her to sit down, the industrious kittens decided to get up to eye level the only way they knew how. Check out their bizarrely cute methods in the video below!

I mean, whatever works, right? Judging by all of those giggles, I don’t think this lady minds one bit.

LONDON Art is for everyone. And, we’re not talking about just humans.

The world’s first contemporary art exhibition for dogs opened Friday in London.

Designed by British artist Dominic Wilcox, the exhibition features a series of interactive art installations created solely for pooches’ entertainment.

From open car window simulators to giant ball pits, each work of art is based on activities beloved by our four-legged friends.

Curators consulted veterinary experts to find out about the best mental and physical stimuli for a dog’s wellbeing.

Needless to say, the first visitors to the exhibition seem to have enjoyed it immensely.

Here’s a Springer Spaniel with Catch, a screen that simulates a frisbee bouncing around a screen…

Rescuers come to the aid of a squirrel stuck in a cup

Turns out, it takes quite a few folks to free a squirrel from the trappings of a plastic cup.

The heroes at Enfield EMS, the ambulance provider for a Connecticut town, came to the rescue of a terrified squirrel.

In a video they shared on Aug. 12, a team of wildlife rescuers freed the squirrel with the help of a pink blanket.

It took them a few triesand the squirrel got a chance to show off its impressive leaping skills as it bounded across the pavement before finally scurrying away into the trees.

Let’s all make a pact not to leave our cups in the wild and relieve the squirrel population from unnecessary panic attacks.

These Bovines Act Like Lil’ Puppies After Meeting Their New Herd

Integrating cows into the herd is usually a pretty straightforward task — rather unexciting, even. The animals meet and get along instantly because cows love meeting new friends. So when Panda (the black-and-white bovine in the below video) and Jazzy (the smaller brown one) were let loose to introduce themselves to a herd of cows, their owner didn’t think much would happen.

        But boy, was she wrong!

Who knew cows could be this happy, let alone run that fast!

Rescuing farmed animals from potential slaughter, Animal Place provides cows and other creatures with a sanctuary where they can always live free. Which in the case of these happy-go-lucky guys, seems like a pretty great reason to celebrate!
