Animal shelter celebrates adopting all their dogs in heartwarming video

One Colorado animal shelter has a lot to celebrate this holiday season.

For two days in a row, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region adopted all of their available dogs.

The group was able to achieve the heartwarming success with their #HomeForTheHolidays promotion, helping them adopt over 25 dogs and 23 cats.

The non-profit shared the news through a triumphant video on their Facebook page, accompanied with the proud message, “What happens when your last available dog gets adopted? Your staff and volunteers jump into the kennels to celebrate!”

The shelter already has new animals in need of homes, and asks that people, “keep those adoptions coming!”

You can adopt, or sponsor an animal’s stay at “Hotel HSPPR” here.

Oh, are you looking for dogs? You have come to the wrong place.

You see, there are no dogs here. Not even one dog. All the dogs are elsewhere, and none of them are here.

Here. We’ll prove it to you.

The internet has chosen the latest meme and it’s this sly looking bird

Image: twitter

Another day another meme, my friends.

The internet never takes an off day and is a fickle beast when it comes to its memes. Today’s meme is an image of a mischievous looking duck that looks like it knows something you don’t. The origin of said image is already lost to history, of course, but needless to say the internet has had a great time with it over the past couple of days.

According to the meme lifecycle this meme will be dead in 20 minutes and a new meme will rise. What will it be? Angry Looking Pug? Side Eye Rabbit? Me? Only time will tell…

These shelter dogs and cats had the best Christmas ever

Christmas is a hard time for so many creatures, hoomins and non-hoomins alike.

These shelter dogs from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa had the time of their lives, however, when staff members allowed them to select a special Christmas toy from underneath the shelter’s Tree of Life.” The shelter sets up the tree every year to help benefit the animals.

While some of the animals in the video have been adopted, others are still looking for homes.

Here’s to 2017.

Fluffy Samoyed puppies bravely fight off evil wind-up toy frog

Happy dogs of all sizes frolic in a leaf pile

Right now, we’re in the middle of the dog days of summer, with temperatures exceeding ten million degrees. But think about this: what if it were autumn?

More specifically, what if we had crisp fall leaves? Also, what if dogs were playing in those leaves? And they were very happy? And no one was sweating?

Sorry, is this cruel? Anyway, here are some dogs playing in a leaf pile. Please try to stay cool.

Massive 53-pound snapping turtle rescued from a drain pipe

Image:  Houston SPCA Wildlife Center of Texas

A massive 53-pound snapping turtle was rescued from a drainpipe in Texas after it became stuck.

A man was exploring a new development in Hockey, Texas, when he discovered the stuck turtle and phoned the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas, ABC 13 reports.

The SPCA arrived on the scene and identified the turtle as a threatened alligator snapping turtle. They then called the Rosehill Fire department to help with the rescue because the pipe was too thick to open without heavy machinery.

Image: Houston SPCA Wildlife Center of Texas

The fire department arrived and used the jaws of life to spread the pipe so that the turtle could be removed. Unfortunately, after the turtle was removed several other alligator snapping turtles and other animals were found stuck in the pipe.

The massive turtle blocking the pipe was still alive and was taken to the Wildlife Center of Texas to receive medical attention.

Rogue cats steals the spotlight in interview with Latvian mayor

An online Q&A session with Nils Uakovs, the mayor of Latvia’s capital, Riga, was all well and dandy until a fluffy feline made its debut and casually crashed the interview.

Uakovs is an animal lover and has two cats living at Riga’s Town Hall building, so sometimes this means things can get a bit unpredictable. The cat got a little thirsty, strutted onto the scene, and boldly sipped out of the mayor’s cup like it owned the place.

You can see Uakovs trying to stare his pet down so it’d get the hint. He tries to remain cool, but can’t keep a straight face after the adorable interruption.

Jimmy Fallon has puppies predict the winner of Sunday’s big game

Fleet Foxes singer gives sweater to a fan who made a Tumblr for it, indie rock lives

This story begins, of course, in the Pacific Northwest.

Five years ago, a Fleet Foxes fan did what every high schooler did in 2011 and created a single topic tumblr devoted to something she really likes. That happened to be a cozy sweater belonging to the band’s lead singer, Robin Pecknold.

Now, thanks to the powers of the internet and the impeding Autumn winds, she owns that sweater.

Fuck Yeah Robin Pecknold’s Sweater was born the same year of the Fleet Foxes’ Helplessness Blues. The blog pays tribute to the musician’s oatmeal sweater featuring a crimson, tan and gray geometric design that, for a time, he was quite fond of wearing.

A photo posted by Robin Pecknold (@robinpecknold) on

As time marched on, Pecknold’s sweater stayed out of the public eye, but FYRPS prevailed, sharing fan art devoted to the sweater and even a nice picture of Drake wearing a similar design.

Four months ago, Pecknold answered a question about the famed sweater in a Reddit AMA, explaining that he hadn’t been wearing it, but it traveled with him though various moves over the years.

The sweater blogger, the sweater and the sweater owner were finally able to arrange a new home for the iconic piece of indie rock memorabilia. Pecknold shipped it off to its cozy new home, and come winter, it will be swallowed in her coat.

Watch Orca whales toss boats like toys while hunting a sea lion

A couple of boaters found themselves directly in the middle of a pod of orca whales hunting a sea lion off of the coast of Bowyer Island in British Columbia, Canada.

According to Viral Hog, the man filming the incident spotted a few whale watching boats and went to go check out the action. After observing the orcas from a distance for 30 minutes, things took a turn when a sea lion sought refuge under one of the boats. The orcas bashed the boats like toys in a bathtub while trying to hunt the sea lion.

The boaters were fearful that they would harm the animals with the propellers on their boats if they tried to get away, so the boats stayed put until a guide on the whale watching boat suggested that they move closer to the island so the sea lion could get to safety.

Thankfully for the sea lion, the tactic worked.

“The sea lion was safe in the end, though clearly a little injured,” the boater told Viral Hog.

Eddie Redmayne acting out animals for Ellen to guess will have you in stitches

Puppies rescued from barn fire, treated with oxygen from pet masks

These two-day-old puppies were pulled from a burning barn on Monday.

LONDON Firefighters were forced to use miniature pet oxygen masks to treat two puppies rescued from a burning barn in Devon, UK, on Monday.

In a post on Facebook, Newton Abbot Fire Station shared photos of the dogs being treated with gel and oxygen after rescue services arrived at the scene in the early afternoon.

Here are some pictures taken by firefighters at the scene.

Firefighters administer oxygen to the puppies.

The masks fit over the puppy’s heads to help them take in the air.

One puppy, which suffered burns, was treated with gel.

There were five puppies in the barn when the fire took hold. Three died at the scene.

The two dogs pictured in the photos above were treated by firefighters and then taken to the vets. Sadly, a spokesperson from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service confirmed to Mashable that one of the rescued puppies has since died.

“They weren’t bad burns but was in a wide area and was just too much for such a little puppy,” the owner of the farm, James Barter, was quoted as saying in the Torquay Herald Express. “I think of myself as fairly tough but I was pretty upset.”

He went on to say that the surviving puppy seems to be doing fine.

“We have named it Blaze in honour of its miraculous survival,” he said.

David Bowie’s son posts Twitter appeal for homeless dog named after his dad

LONDON David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones has made a Twitter appeal on behalf of a homeless dog named after his father.

Bowie is a 3-year-old lurcher a type of dog that’s a cross between a sighthound like a Greyhound and a terrier currently being kept at Dogs Trust Bridgend in Wales, UK. He has one blue eye and one brown. According to a press release sent to Mashable, his condition has caused him to be overlooked.

Meet Bowie, a young lurcher who needs a home.

The story made the news in Wales, and it wasn’t long before it had caught the attention of Jones.

On Thursday, the director posted a series of tweets appealing to people to help Bowie find a home.

David Bowie’s eyes appeared to be a different colour due to a condition called Anisocoria, according to this piece in the Independent, which was caused by an injury that left one pupil permanently dilated.

Its such a shame that Bowie has been overlooked so far, but were confident well find a home for him soon,” Rehoming Centre Manager Angela Wetherall was quoted in a press release sent to Mashable.

Anyone interested in giving Bowie a home can call the Dogs Trust’s Bridgend branch on 0300 303 0292.

Dolphin at SeaWorld leaps up to grab woman’s iPad from her hands

This dolphin doesn’t care if you want to stay dry or have a working iPad.

Video of a duck battling a hawk proves that ducks are super birds

If a dog let kittens play with its tail and this rhinos let a goat hang out on its back, then it should come as no surprise that farm animals also have their share of interspecies friendships.

Reddit user JasonsKetoAccount caught footage over the weekend of his pet duck Felix scaring off a hawk who’d attempted to prey on Felix’s chicken friend.

In a comment on his post, JasonKetoAccount writes that when the other birds heard the hawk approaching, they scattered. You can actually see the birds in their cage having a fit when the predator swooped into the yard.

Naturally, the caption “Super Duck” is a fitting one.

Intense footage shows three whales breaching just feet from kayakers

A few kayakers got a little too close to three whales showing off their jumping skills last week in British Columbia, Canada.

According to the video, the group was safely observing a mother nursing her calf off the coast of the Penn Islands when the whales descended into the water and out of sight. Initially, the kayakers were at a safe distance, but when the whales suddenly breached the surface, they were much, much closer than before.

“There’s not a whole lot you can do when the humpbacksdecidethey’re going to move,” Heather Lawrence, who filmed part of the clip told the CBC.

The calf breached first, which was impressive enough, but the mother whale was the real showstopper.

“The baby jumped, and that was like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ But then the mom came up right away and she’s humongous compared to baby,” said Lawrence.

Fortunately, the whales did not hit or injure any of the kayakers as they were showing off their impressive bellyflop skills.

Lawrence also explained to the CBC that when the mother whale breached, she immediately dropped her camera to paddle away from the whale as the guides instructed.

Play god with Microsoft’s new bot that forges people with objects or animals

A bot can dream.

Bots have come a long way since SmarterChild amazed us with its coherent responses more than a decade ago.

Nowadays you can play (an evil, vengeful) God forging picture of celebrities, objects and animals together.

It’s all thanks to an experimental Microsoft bot called Project Murphy, which lets you create Franken-celebs on the fly.

Murphy uses “the knowledge of Bing” to help visualise hypothetical “what if…” questions from users, according to Microsoft.

It’s still pretty new, so it won’t have all the answers to your messed up queries just yet, but the more people it interacts with, the smarter it gets a.k.a. machine learning.

Fortunately, it hasn’t gone full Nazi like another of Microsoft’s A.I. bots, Tay, did earlier this year.

Instead, it does a disturbingly great job of forging people’s faces together. Granted, it struggles a bit with animated characters from films in the early-2000s.

You can even forge people with animals, like in this portrait of acclaimed director Martin Scorcese who’s been blended with a horse.

You may have to get specific when it comes to naming objects. Just repeat the question if it doesn’t get it the first time.

Eventually, Murphy will understand what you want.

Image: project murphy

You can also use emoji to tell Murphy whether if you like or dislike the image it created for you, and whether you want to see another visualisation based off your query. You can even flag the image as “inappropriate.”

Currently Murphy is available over messaging applications such as Skype, Facebook Messenger and Telegram. It’s also coming soon to Slack and Kik.

Have fun folks, but be careful what you wish for.

‘Drop bears’ finally honoured with their own street name

The mythical Australian drop bear loves the taste of tourists.
Image: youtube

Koalas are cute and cuddly, right? You gorgeous, naive reader, just how deeply wrong you are.

The koala’s vicious cousin, “drop bear” is totally a real thing and it will bite, kill and even embarrass you, if you get too close.

The mythical creatures are widely regarded (at least in camp fire tales and articles such as this, designed to scare foreigners) to be the size of a small leopard. They drop from the camouflage of eucalyptus trees onto unsuspecting bushwalkers.

It’s about time such a formidable beast got naming rights to an Australian landmark.

Drop bears are so ingrained in the collective imagination of Australians keen to scare visitors, that even the Australia Museum has a web page devoted to them including the locations of vicious attacks.

Now, to honour the terrifying critters, mayor of Tamworth in New South Wales has taken charge of an operation to afford drop bears the fear and respect they deserve; naming rights to a local lane. Drop Bear Lane.

Mayor Col Murray told Mashable the council decided to honour the mythical creatures in a picturesque setting just outside of the town.

“The habitat in this beautiful country area where this unknown road runs up along the creek with quite heavily timbered surrounds. It would be an ideal habitat for the drop bear to sustain,” he said.

Murray said it would still take a few months until it appears on the currently unmarked road. And when that day comes? “I’m sure there’ll be significant celebration,” he said.

Maybe even some carnage.

For more information on drop bears and how to survive drop bear attacks, visit the offical Drop Bear Protection Agency website here.

Watch a hungry bear try to steal dog food from a garage

A hungry bear with an appetite for dog food tried to steal a meal from a California bed and breakfast.

Diana Chase, owner of the Pine Mountain Inn, opened her garage to find a bear knee-deep in a huge bag of dog kibble.

“What are you doing?” Chase can be heard asking the bear.

Moments later, the bear retreats with the dog food and tries to make a getaway. Chase follows, ordering the bear to drop the food. Eventually, the bear does exit the garage without the food, and Chase is able to close the garage door, but not before the two come within just a few feet of each other.

While Chase did the right thing trying to scare away the bear, she should not have used soft tones when talking to the bear, and she did put herself in danger multiple times. Yes, bears are cute, but they can also eat your face.

Bros ruin beautiful shot of humpback whales in San Francisco Bay

Bro, check out these sick whales.

A group of humpback whales were spotted near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay on Thursday a beautiful sight for anyone who appreciates nature.

A local ABC 7’s chopper was there to capture the event, which was ruined by some area bros who were just trying to catch some sick air.

According to ABC, marine biologists believe that the whales were attracted to the bay because of an increased number of anchovies swimming near the shore, not to see any sweet tricks.

Don’t worry, though. One of the kite surfers fell right after coming extremely close to one of the majestic sea beasts just trying to score a meal.

Adoptable puppies get even more adoptable when Aubrey Plaza makes up their backstories

Puppies plus late night television is always the recipe for a great video.

On Thursday night’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert decided to help some cute puppers out by airing a segment called Rescue Dog Rescue with Aubrey Plaza. The two took turns cradling adoptable puppies and fabricating ridiculous personalities for them so as to make them more attractive to potential owners.

Honestly, we don’t need funny backstories to love these pups. Just one glimpse at their tiny faces will do. But laughing while we awww is always a welcome addition.

Dogs filmed stealing clothes off a washing line are having so much fun

Lucky seal jumps on a boat to avoid hungry pod of orca whales

That is one lucky seal.

A clever seal desperate for its life found an interesting escape route recently, using a few unsuspecting humans and their boat to seek refuge from a pod of hungry orcas.

In the clip, uploaded by YouTuber Kirk Frase who did not specify the location, the men on the boat appear to be photographing the seal hunting. When suddenly, the sea dog hops on to the back of the boat.

“Just stay there, will you? Fucking stop jumping off,” one man says to the seal. Apparently the seal had already jumped on the boat, then jumped off again and realized that was a terrible idea.

The YouTuber also posted a series of clips of the incident, which shows the seal returning to the boat from the water once again as at least three orcas circle the boat.

In another clip the seal again retreated to the water and attempted to use the boat’s engine to shield itself from the killer whales.

Fortunately this story has a happy ending, for the seal at least.

In the last clip uploaded to the channel, the group can be seen congratulating the seal as it swims off into the water.

“Well done, bud. You survived,” one man can be heard yelling.

Bear on couch too damn chill to eat you

Image: courtesy of mandy stantic

Bears don’t have any interest in your miserable standing desks, thank you very much.

Mandy Stantic was visiting a garbage dump in Northern Manitoba last spring when she came upon a black bear sitting on a discarded sofa. Stantic, whose photos just recently went viral, had specifically driven to the dump with her daughter to see the dump (god bless Canadian road trips) when she discovered the bear just lounging.

“The bears are always very active at the dump. This one must have been in the mood to relax after eating his full and climbed up on the couch to get comfortable,” Stantic told Mashable

“Not unusual to see bears at the dump, but to see one sitting just casual like a human was pretty unique and I had to take a picture.”

Image: courtesy of mandy stantic

According to Stantic, the dump is a common hang out spot for the area’s local bears. What it lacks in greenery and pleasant odors it more than makes up for in bears lounging on La-Z-Bears.

All this bear needs is a lava lamp and some frozen pizza to become its spirit human, Al Bundy.

Tiny bird attempts to trick humans by moving traffic cones around

What was thought to be bewitched traffic cones has been revealed to be nature at its cheekiest.

Much like the final act in a episode of Scooby Doo, the mystery of the moving neon road guides was actually the work of a mischievous little bird.

Road workers at New Zealand’s Milford Sound, a popular destination for sightseers, became increasingly puzzled when traffic cones at the entrance of a one-way tunnel kept moving about when no one was looking.

One sneaky CCTV operation later and the mystery was solved. In the cutest possible way.

The orange guides were being moved about by native kea birds when no one was looking.

The New Zealand Traffic Agency speculated that the notoriously social birds were playing on the road to get the attention of humans, in the hopes of being fed.

On the original YouTube post, Kevin Thompson, manager for the Milford Alliance said “We think the keas listen for the cars in the tunnel and move the road cones between the streams of traffic.”

For now the construction group are trialling heavier road cones to keep the keas safe and deter them from playing in traffic; something a nationally endangered species probably shouldn’t be doing.

There now exists a guide to making an axe out of gummy bears

Have you ever been chopping logs out in the woods and wondered, brushing sweat from your brow, “Why is this axe made from boring wood instead of colorful gummy bear candies?” Well, it exists now.

This gummy bear axe handle is an unusual DIY from Youtuber Peter Brown, a self-described “geek with a full set of power tools.” But it ends up giving the handle a unique stained glass effect. And now that we live in a post-gummy-bear-axe world, you have no excuse not to fill your axe with tiny, colorful bears.

Warning, though: Brown says that the gummy bears aren’t strong enough to make the axe particularly sturdy. So it’s just for show, until someone invents industrial-strength gummy bears.

Calm your dogs down with this fabulous doggy leotard

This determined little boy just sent out an urgent PSA on behalf of a beloved four-legged friend.

Six-year-old Roman is calling on his followers to rescue Legend, a deaf and lovable Labrador retriever currently at Skagit Valley Humane Society in Burlington, Washington. The adorable video has more than 18,000 views, and counting.

Roman’s passion for rescuing canines began when he was just 4-years-old, according to mom, Jennifer McConn.

“He opted to forego receiving presents on his fourth birthday and instead asked for donations so he could give those to a local rescue in Texas,” McConn told Mashable. “It’s kind of taken off since then.”

McConn said Roman typically enjoys interacting with dogs. He and his mom often make videos to spread the word about pups in need.

Now, for his latest mission, Roman is determined to find a home for Legend.

“We transport dogs up to rescues and humane societies such as Skagit Valley Humane Society or to our direct adopters,” said McConn.

“Typically dogs that are in the humane society are our first priority to visit but there is always one or two non-Project Freedom Ride dogs that pull on our heart strings, like Legend.”

Three puppies found safe after five days stuck under avalanche

Rescuers hold three puppies that were found alive in the rubble of the avalanche-hit Hotel Rigopiano, near Farindola, central Italy.

Amid the desperation surrounding avalanche-struck Hotel Rigopiano in central Italy, there is hope.

Three Abruzzo sheepdog puppies were pulled out of the tonnes of snow and rubble Monday, encouraging rescuers searching for 22 people still missing, five days on from the disaster.

The trio of puppies were found in the hotel’s boiler room, with jubilant emergency crews carrying the pups in their arms.

One firefighter buried his face in the fluffy white fur of the dogs to give it a kiss.

“They just started barking very softly,” said Sonia Marini, a member of the Forestry Corps.

“In fact, it was hard to find them right away because they were hidden. Then we heard this very tiny bark and we saw them from a little hole the firefighters had opened in the wall. Then we expanded the hole and we pulled them out.”

The pups were born to the hotel’s resident sheepdogs, Nuvola and Lupo, who had managed to find their own way out following the avalanche last Wednesday.

While the sight of the puppies have lifted rescuers’ spirits, firefighter spokesperson Luca Cari stressed these puppies were found in an isolated part of the hotel and the discovery isn’t necessarily a positive sign for other rescues.

“We’re happy to have saved them, and these are important moments in a dramatic situation,” he said. “But I don’t think there’s much correlation with finding other people.”

The Associated Press contributed reporting.

You guys gotta get a look at the size of this leatherback sea turtle

Image: Facebook,  Pippa Partington

Damn, you guys gotta get a look at this turtle.

Two people from New Zealand were on a boat and they saw this big turtle and filmed it. Good on those two because wow, I would not have believed them if they didn’t have it on camera.

I mean, hell yeah at the size of this thing. Throw some wheels on this guy and you’ve got a Toyota Camry, you know what I mean? You could eat a Thanksgiving dinner with your whole family on the back of this guy.

Pippa Partington and her husband Craig spotted the turtle (a leatherback sea turtle, to be exact) off the coast of Mangawhai on December 6.

Michelangelo the Ninja Turtle visited the Met’s Michelangelo exhibition, and there are pictures

Michelangelo the Ninja Turtle stopped by the Met today to take in an exhibition devoted to his namesake, Michelangelo the Renaissance artist.

And the pictures … honestly, they’re works of art in themselves.

The exhibition, titled Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman & Designer, features three marble sculptures and over 100 drawings by the artist, along with “complementary works” by other artists. It will remain on display through February 12.

The amphibian Michelangelo looks pretty stoked to be there, as he should. It’s not every day you get to kick off your morning by admiring priceless works of ancient art.

But we’ve gotta say – of all the Ninja Turtles, Michelangelo is not the one we would’ve pegged as an art lover. What, the Met couldn’t extend Michelangelo a plus-one so he could bring Donatello along?

Woman finds her cats passed out after eating her marijuana plants

Forget catnip, the good stuff is here.

A woman in Massachusetts had a little issue with her grow lights for her cannabis plants, so she moved them to her porch in order for them to continue to soak up the sun a bit.

Unfortunately, the woman found out the hard way that her two cats have developed a taste for the sticky icky, and she found them sprawled out of the floor, surrounded by half-eaten weed plants.

It’s unclear if the cats would actually get stoned from eating the plants raw, but it sure seems like they enjoyed it.

Oregon pizza shop pays tribute to ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ with 101-cheese pizza

If you’re going to put cheese on a pizza, why stop at one? Why, indeed?

A pizza place in Portland, Oregon, took this pizza-stential question very seriously, deciding they had nothing to lose by totally just going for it. So, as part of an annual Portland celebration of pizza, Scottie’s Pizza Parlor created a pie using 101 cheeses.

The pie is called the Centouno Formaggio, and, according to Scottie Pizza Parlor’s website, it was inspired by the 99-cheese pizza from the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In fact, Australian pizzamaker Johnny di Francesco did create a 99-cheese pizza in real life to prove it could be done. But Scottie’s Pizza Parlor wanted to do one (or, actually two) better.

The pizza’s ingredients include a shredded 55-cheese blend and 36 other soft cheeses, plus a blend of nine grated cheeses. There’s also aged part-skim mozzarella stuffed in the crust.

Scottie Riviera told Fox News that they wanted the pizza to taste like a regular cheese pizzaat least initially. With the first bite, you dont know what to expect, so you can almost mistake it for a regular slice,” Riviera said. “Then you chew a little more and you start to get a lot of character here: theres things going on, its almost hard to place.

Alas, the the opportunity to taste-test this groundbreaking pizza is no longer. It was available just for one day.

Scottie’s Pizza Parlor has applied to the Guinness World Records for the distinction of Most Cheeses on a Pizza. While it isn’t certificate-official, pizza lovers everywhere will recognize this feat for what it is amazing.

Sea lions jostle to get an up-close look at this flying drone thingy

A big bunch of sea lions looking at a drone camera is even cuter than it sounds.
Image: Jacqueline Mcghie

Sea lions are pretty cute animals already, but a bunch of them looking curiously at a drone camera? It’ll make you squee inside.

It’s a sight captured by Australian photographer Jacqueline McGhie, who was in a boat with her boyfriend in Jurien Bay, Western Australia. They often spot sea lions playing in the water, so McGhie knows their behaviour pretty well.

“The Sea Lions remind me of puppies, I’ve swum with these particular sea lions before in the warmer months and they’re always so curious and playful. They mimic you and show off with their ridiculously good underwater aerobatic skills,” McGhie told Mashable via email.

Image: jacqueline mcghie

But it was the sea lions’ eager jostling to get a look at the couple’s new drone that caught them by surprise.

“It was really interesting to see them all so transfixed on the drone. I was worried about launching it in case the noise scared them but we kept it far enough away and it doesn’t appear it would have bother them anyway.

“They were just so focused and curious about what is was. As soon as we moved the drone they all shifted and followed it until we hovered in one place and then they were pushing over each other to get a better look. Like I said, just like curious puppies!”

No, we’re not jealous at all.

Huge bear surprises mountain bikers on a trail

A few mountain bikers had an unwelcome guest briefly joint their downhill run at the Malin Brdo in Slovakia recently.

YouTuber Dusan Vink was following his friend down the mountain when a huge brown bear jumps in front of Vink and starts to charge his buddy. Vink screams to alert his friend of the bear that’s following him and the bear cuts off trail.

The biker in front stops, which was probably a good idea considering the trail ahead had a switchback, which would have put the bikers right in the path of the bear after it cut off trail.

It’s unclear what made the bear end its chase, but it was likely a combination of multiple bikers and Vink’s yelling that scared the bear back into the woods.

Nora the rescue puppy loves napping with her baby brother

Cats aren’t the only ones who enjoy a good nap.

In fact, mom Elizabeth Spence posts photos to Instagram of her English Pointer, Nora, who enjoys her daily nap in the cutest way possible cuddled beside Spence’s eight-month-old son, Archie.

Mashable spoke with Spence via email to learn more about the adorably special bond that her son and Nora share.

“We got Nora from Funds For Furry Friends, a local rescue shelter, seven years ago prior to having kids,” Spence said. “Despite having come from an abusive situation, her sweet and gentle nature shone through and we knew with certainty she would be a wonderful family dog when the time came.”

While Nora gets along with Spence’s three kids, three rescue cats and her other two rescue dogs, it’s clear she and Archie are especially close.

“I noticed a strong bond growing between Nora and Archie when Archie was about four months old and so I began photographing their daily interactions, like squirrel watching, and the supervised communal naps they take together,” said Spence.

A potentially rabid squirrel is terrorizing residents of Brooklyn

Residents in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, are on high alert for an tiny rodent terrorizing the neighborhood.

New York City Health Department warns locals that there is a potentially rabid squirrel on the loose that has attacked and bitten at least five people on separate occasions. Although squirrels rarely have rabies, officials urge those who have been bitten to seek medical treatment.

According to the New York Daily News, all the squirrel attacks occurred near the Parkside and Ocean Ave. entrance to the park. Four of the five bite victims have been identified, and authorities want the fifth person, bitten while jogging, to come forward to help catch this crazed creature.

One of the bite victims is 7-year-old Maria Guerrero. According to WABC7, Guerrero’s family said the squirrel leaped into the air and sank its teeth into the child’s arm, completely unprovoked. When Guerrero’s dad tried to pry the animal from his daughter’s arm, it relentlessly came back for more, attacking two more times before climbing up a nearby tree. WABC7 correspondent N. J. Burkett tweeted photos of Guerrero’s bitten and bandaged arm following the attack.

The young girl said that the creature looked like a “flying squirrel” because of the way it leaped onto her arm. She needed stitches and is being treated preventably for rabies.

Another victim, Leku Percival, shot a video feeding the squirrel when it bit him on the fingertip. He said he’s convinced that this is the same crazed squirrel that is terrorizing the neighborhood. Although he has not seen a doctor, after hearing warnings from health officials, he plans to get checked out within the next 24 hours.

City officials have begun posting flyers around the neighborhood urging residents to report any other squirrel attacks, and to seek medical attention immediately if bitten.

Brooklynites are taking caution from the animal, while, of course, making some jokes in the meantime.

The squirrel has not yet been caught, but health officials say that if the creature actually does have rabies, it’s probably dead by now.

If you see something, say something, and get this squirrel in cuffs.

Aug. 26 is National Dog Day. In homage to the greatest animal to ever roam the earth and sleep at the end of our beds, here are 11 puppers who prove beyond reasonable doubt that dogs are better than humans.

This eager pooch not only races to greet their kid friend when they returned from school, but carries their bag like the world’s most courteous and hospitable pet-porter

This Lion quickly learned that giraffes are not to be messed with

Giraffes are more badass than they look.
Image: bbc

LONDON If someone asked you to predict the outcome of a pack of lions hunting a fleeing giraffe, you probably wouldn’t bet too heavily on the giraffe.

But that’s where you’d be wrong.

As we found out during Sunday’s episode of Planet Earth II, giraffes are significantly tougher than their spindly frames suggest.

Early on in the episode, David Attenborough narrated a scene in which a hungry pack of lions were hunting down a giraffe.

“The giraffe has the speed and stamina to outrun the pride,” said Attenborough. “But it’s being chased into a trap.

“Up ahead, the lead female waits.”

Turns out the trap wasn’t as effective as the lions were hoping, though.

Twitter really got behind the giraffe.

There were some inevitable jokes.

The clip made some people realise just how easy they’ve got it.

All in all, though, this person probably summed the whole thing up best:

The lesson? Don’t ever get on the wrong side of a giraffe.

Joe Biden met a puppy named Biden and it went exactly how you’d expect

Hello, and welcome to your Wednesday afternoon moment of zen.

Former vice president and presidential-level heartthrob Joe Biden (don’t @ us) met a 4-month-old Golden Retriever named Biden and for a moment, the entire world stopped spinning, and everything was right again.

Biden, the world’s most adorable dog, made an early trip to the Capitol on Wednesday in hopes of catching a glimpse of the former VP – there to celebrate the seventh anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.

As you can imagine based on this face, human Biden noticed the puppy right away.

As soon as he saw the dog during the actual speech, he pointed at the dog, tapped his friend and then started like cracking up,” Sydney, Bidens owner, told BuzzFeed News. “Right towards the end, I, like, kind of signaled him, and he… gave me a wink to come over.

Image: AP/REX/Shutterstock

As soon as I told him his name was Biden, he started kissing the dog, which is like exactly what I expected Biden would do, Sydney said, noting that “As soon as I told him, his face lit up.

I named the dog Biden just because he is probably my favorite politician and favorite elected official, Sydney revealed.

I really respect Joe Biden even though I dont necessarily align with him politically.

Pet squirrel valiantly defends owner’s stuff when burglar breaks in

It turns out dogs aren’t the only animal that’s fiercely loyal to their humans. This past Monday, the local Idaho ABC news station reported on the town’s new hero: Joey the pet squirrel.

When a burglar broke into owner Adam Pearl’s home, Joey apparently sprang into action, scratching and attacking the intruder. The culprit later told police that Joey bothered him the entire time he was in the house.

Though usually only dogs get the honor of being good boys, we can confidently say that Joey is also a very good boy.

Woman caught by Google Earth flicking the bird in front of Scott Walker’s mansion

Smith flashes the finger for posterity
Image: Google earth

Several years ago, Google Earth captured a Madison, Wisconsin, woman giving the a big middle finger to the state’s governors mansion. Today, she’s become an internet hero.

The lakeside compound where the photos were snapped is home to controversial politician (and failed Republican presidential candidate) Scott Walker. The woman, who Mashable has identified as Ruth Smith, told us she actually made the gesture in June 2011 right as Walker was facing a contentious recall vote. Though, her sentiment is as relevant for angry progressives today as it was then.

There is no mistaking Smith’s message

Image: google earth

Smith, a childrens librarian and a mother of two, said she’d made a habit out of giving the finger or yelling something if she passed the mansion while out on a run. That day, however, she spotted a small white car with camera tripod approaching, so she held her gesture higher and longer than she might have otherwise. Sure enough as the car passed she saw the Google logo and felt triumphant.

Her protest was first spotted by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in 2014, but it wasnt until this week that the story really took off after her one-woman demonstration was highlighted by local paper the Badger Herald. Smith, who left Madison for Colorado in 2014, says the reaction has been mostly positive. Shes glad people appreciate the humor in the admittedly crude gesture, but she took pains to say the attention should really be on those who are out there working every day for social justice.

Still, her middle finger move seems to be hitting a nerve and has made her into the hometown hero the people need for the Trump era.
