Long story short, bullies suck. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, they will sniff out your insecurities and find any way to exploit them.
You can cower and lick your wounds, or you can do what this teenager in Lampasas, Texas did, and use their venom in a way that actually does some good.
Meet Dannie McMillan, who discovered a vicious social media account mocking her for her size.
Some kids from her school started a Twitter account called “Dee’s a Fat Whale,” using a profile picture of McMillan, taken from her powerlifting team, witha whale sticker slapped over herface.
“I just started crying,” McMillan said. “I was just really upset.”
But then she just got kind of ticked and decided to take some action.
Shemessaged an idol of hers, plus-sized model Laura Lee.
“I jokingly told her: part of me wants to cry all day,” McMillan said. “And, the other part of me wants to get a t-shirt with a whale on it and wear it to school to show that they can’t get to me. And, she was like ‘oh, we should.’”
So that’s exactly what they did.
McMillanput “Dee The Fat Whale Saves The Whales” t-shirt up for sale on Booster for $20, with all profits going to the Save the Whales foundation for the purpose of saving actual whales.
If you don’t want a shirt yourself, she also set up a GoFundMe for the same whale-saving mission, and between the two sites, has already collected hundreds of dollars to help spread awareness and protect marine life.
This project means so much to me because while I can help make a difference in the oceans, I can also set an example for other victims of bullying,” she said. “I can take someone’s hate and use it to spread love.
And for the record, the Twitterpage mocking herhas since been removed. Go Dannie, go!
